Fazer Breaks Ground on Lahti Chocolate Factory
Fazer, one of Finland’s most iconic and trusted food companies, has officially launched construction on a brand-new state-of-the-art chocolate factory in Lahti, representing the largest investment in its 133-year history. With a staggering price tag of €400 million, the facility signals a bold move to significantly boost chocolate production capacity, modernise operations, and ensure long-term competitiveness in the evolving global sweets market.
Located in the Pippo-Kujala business district of Lahti, southern Finland, the new facility will span nearly 60,000 square metres and is expected to begin operations in 2027. Designed with cutting-edge automation, sustainability targets, and premium production efficiency, the factory marks a generational leap forward for Fazer’s manufacturing capabilities.
Strategic Growth and Supply Chain Transformation
Fazer’s investment is rooted in the need to secure its future growth by building a scalable and modernised supply chain that meets rising consumer demand both locally and internationally. The company, known for beloved chocolate brands like Karl Fazer, Geisha, and Dumle, sees this development as essential for supporting expanding product portfolios and entry into new markets.
“The investment is a milestone in our company’s strategy to grow in the premium chocolate category and strengthen our international presence,” said Christoph Vitzthum, President and CEO of Fazer Group. “This factory will be one of the most modern chocolate manufacturing plants in the world, enabling us to innovate, improve efficiency, and raise the bar for sustainability.”
Boosting Domestic Industry and Employment
In addition to strengthening Fazer’s global production network, the project is a boon to the Finnish economy. During the construction phase alone, it will create hundreds of temporary jobs, with long-term employment opportunities expected to follow once the plant becomes operational. The Lahti region, already known for its focus on circular economy initiatives and green development, provides an ideal setting for this ambitious project.
Lahti’s city officials welcomed the news enthusiastically. “Fazer’s decision confirms Lahti’s position as a forward-looking industrial hub,” said Pekka Timonen, Mayor of Lahti. “This investment shows confidence in our region and brings new dynamism to our business environment.”
Sustainability at the Core
Fazer’s chocolate factory will be built with environmental responsibility at its core. From energy efficiency and reduced emissions to waste recycling and advanced water management systems, the facility reflects Fazer’s strong commitment to sustainability.
The factory aims to achieve carbon neutrality in operations over time and will incorporate renewable energy sources, optimised logistics, and low-impact building materials wherever possible. As the company continues to implement its ambitious environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, the Lahti facility will serve as a benchmark for future investments.
“Our goal is to reduce the environmental footprint of our entire value chain,” said Heli Anttila, VP of Chocolate Production at Fazer. “This factory is a step toward that ambition. It’s not just about more chocolate—it’s about better chocolate, made responsibly.”
Adapting to Market Challenges
The announcement comes at a time when the global chocolate industry faces significant challenges, including volatile cocoa prices, supply chain disruptions, and increasing consumer demand for sustainable, high-quality confections. By doubling down on innovation and automation, Fazer is positioning itself to weather market turbulence and deliver consistent quality regardless of external pressures.
The Lahti facility will eventually replace Fazer’s existing production site in Vantaa, which has been in use since 1962. While the Vantaa plant has played a central role in Fazer’s success for decades, its limitations in space and technology prompted the need for an entirely new facility designed for 21st-century production needs.
Looking Ahead
Construction is now underway, with completion targeted for 2026 and full-scale operations expected by 2027. The Lahti chocolate factory is more than a business expansion—it represents Fazer’s commitment to its heritage, its people, and the future of ethical, high-quality chocolate.
As the foundation is laid in Lahti, chocolate lovers across Finland and beyond can look forward to a new era of sweets innovation driven by tradition, ambition, and sustainability.
