THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION FOR EVERYTHING CHOCOLATE

Alexandra Clark has built a chocolate company that looks, sounds and tastes unmistakably connected to Detroit. As founder and Head Chocolatier of Bon Bon Bon, Clark combines handcrafted confectionery with unexpected flavours, playful presentation and an independent spirit.
Clark grew up in a chocolate-loving Michigan family and decided at 19 that chocolate would become her career. She later studied the craft from several perspectives, including confectionery, retail and agricultural commerce. Those experiences helped shape a broader understanding of chocolate, from cacao sourcing to the finished bonbon.
Clark launched Bon Bon Bon in 2014 from the back room of a Coney Island in Hamtramck. Initially open only on Saturdays, the tiny operation gradually attracted attention for both its chocolates and its unconventional personality.
Rather than recreate the traditional luxury chocolate shop, Clark developed something distinctly Detroit. Bon Bon Bon draws on the city’s creativity, manufacturing heritage, multicultural communities and practical ingenuity.
The company calls its production headquarters the “Manufactory,” an appropriate description for a business that combines artisan chocolate with a decidedly Motor City attitude.
The company’s signature creation is the Bon, a small, handcrafted chocolate designed to deliver layers of flavour and texture in just a few bites.
Clark and her team regularly experiment with ingredients and ideas that move well beyond conventional chocolate-box combinations. The company’s Detroit Collection, for example, has included flavours inspired by local foods and traditions, including Michigan cherry, pączki and Detroit’s familiar combination of potato chips, chocolate and salt.
The presentation is equally distinctive. Instead of relying on formal luxury packaging, Bon Bon Bon embraces graphic design, humour and an intentionally approachable style. The result feels contemporary without losing the hand-made character at the centre of the chocolates.
Detroit is more than Bon Bon Bon’s address. It is part of the company’s identity. Production remains based at the Hamtramck headquarters, while Bon Bon Bon currently operates shops in Midtown Detroit, Downtown Detroit, Ann Arbor, Birmingham and Ferndale. The company also works with selected retail partners.
Its connection to Michigan is also reflected in collaborations and seasonal collections. In 2026, for example, Bon Bon Bon partnered with another Michigan-based creative business for its spring packaging while continuing to produce its chocolates by hand.
Clark’s interest in chocolate extends to the industry behind the confection. Her background includes studying cocoa and chocolate value chains, and Bon Bon Bon has publicly discussed its approach to sourcing and responsibility within the chocolate industry.
That wider perspective complements the playful character of the finished chocolates. Bon Bon Bon may be colourful and unconventional, but behind the personality is a serious commitment to craft, ingredients and the people involved in producing chocolate.
More than a decade after Clark opened her first tiny shop, Bon Bon Bon has grown without abandoning the experimental character that made it distinctive. In doing so, Alexandra Clark has created an American chocolate story firmly rooted in Detroit.
