Follow the Story of Chocolate
The museum traces chocolate from cacao cultivation through its transformation into one of the world’s favourite sweets.
Displays introduce visitors to cacao-growing regions, the processing of cacao fruit and the development of chocolate-making techniques. Historic tools, moulds and equipment illustrate how confectionery production has changed over generations.
Step Into an Earlier Chocolate Era
Part of the museum recreates the atmosphere of European confectionery from another time.
Visitors can explore a 1920s-style sweet shop filled with nostalgic details alongside a historic chocolate workshop displaying period equipment and chocolate moulds.
Another room focuses on the culture of drinking chocolate, including pieces from the Szamos family’s private collection of European porcelain.

Discover the Art of Marzipan
Marzipan is an important part of the Szamos story, and some of the museum’s most memorable exhibits showcase what skilled confectioners can create with it.
Among the highlights is a monumental figure inspired by Jean-Étienne Liotard’s famous The Chocolate Girl, created by Szamos confectioners from 78 kilograms of marzipan.
Visitors can also discover detailed marzipan sculptures, including representations connected with Hungarian history and culture.
Take a Guided Chocolate Tour
For a deeper experience, visitors can reserve one of the museum’s guided Chocolate Tours.
The programme explores cacao cultivation and chocolate history while incorporating tastings of cacao beans and dark, milk and white chocolate. A short film provides another look at chocolate production.
English-language Chocolate Tours are offered on selected dates and must be reserved online in advance.
Decorate Your Own Chocolate
The guided experience finishes on a suitably sweet note.
A Szamos chocolate maker demonstrates chocolate moulding before participants decorate their own chocolate creation using ingredients of their choice. The finished chocolate is packaged to take home as a souvenir.
Stop at Szamos Café
Because the museum occupies the upper level of Szamos Café, the chocolate experience does not necessarily end with the exhibits.
Visitors can stop downstairs for Szamos cakes, pastries, chocolates and other confectionery before heading back into central Budapest.
Tips for Planning Your Visit
The museum can be visited independently during regular opening hours, while guided Chocolate Tours require advance online reservations. Groups of more than 10 people must also arrange their visit in advance.
Its location makes the museum particularly easy to incorporate into a day of Budapest sightseeing. It sits on Kossuth Square beside the Hungarian Parliament Building, allowing visitors to combine two very different Budapest experiences without travelling across the city.

Why It’s Worth the Stop
The Szamos Chocolate Museum offers something distinctly Hungarian within the international chocolate-attraction landscape.
Rather than focusing primarily on industrial production, it brings together chocolate history, traditional confectionery, decorative porcelain and the remarkable artistry of marzipan. The guided tour adds tasting and hands-on chocolate decorating for visitors who want a more interactive experience.
Its central Budapest location is another major advantage. This is an attraction travellers can easily add to an existing city itinerary rather than dedicating an entire day to reaching.
— A Note From Our Editor —
Don’t visit expecting a huge factory complex. The appeal of the Szamos Chocolate Museum is its more intimate approach to confectionery history and craftsmanship. The historic chocolate workshop and extraordinary marzipan creations give the museum its personality, while the location beside Parliament makes it an exceptionally convenient chocolate stop when exploring Budapest.
